Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek made a strong return to action at the WTA Canadian Open. She defeated Chinese qualifier Guo Hanyu 6-3, 6-1 in the second round on Thursday. This was her first match since her title win over Amanda Anisimova at Wimbledon.
Swiatek broke Guo’s serve six times and faced little resistance. Her baseline control and court movement were on full display. The World No. 2 never allowed Guo to settle, wrapping up the match in just over an hour.
Naomi Osaka Saves Two Match Points in Comeback Win
The day’s drama came from Naomi Osaka’s thrilling win over Liudmila Samsonova. The four-time Grand Slam champion battled back to win 4-6, 7-6(8), 6-3. She saved two match points in the second set and fought hard in the third.
Samsonova served for the match at 5-4 in the second set. She led 40-15, but missed her first chance with a long forehand. On the second, she hit a poor drop shot that Osaka punished. A double fault from Samsonova gave Osaka the break.
“She definitely came out really hard and, for me, I was definitely overwhelmed and I didn’t know if I should also be hitting winners,” Osaka admitted.
“But after a while I just tried to keep the ball in court,” she added.
Osaka took charge early in the final set, breaking twice to lead 4-1. The win marked her first over a top-20 player since beating Karolina Muchova at the Australian Open.
Osaka, who recently split with coach Patrick Mouratoglou, is now working with Tomasz Wiktorowski. She will next face Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian overcame Renata Zarazua 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the third round.
Keys Starts Strong in Montreal
Sixth seed Madison Keys opened her Canadian Open campaign with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win over Laura Siegemund. She avenged her Wimbledon loss to the German with a clinical performance.
As the tournament moves forward, Swiatek’s dominance and Osaka’s fightback have become key highlights in Montreal.
