Novak Djokovic faced a stunning exit in the Shanghai Masters 2025 semi-final after a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Valentin Vacherot on Saturday. The 38-year-old Serbian entered as the clear favourite, but the qualifier from Monaco scripted a major upset to secure a place in the final.
Injury Trouble Halted Djokovic’s Charge
Djokovic began the contest confidently, matching Vacherot’s intensity early on. But midway through the first set, he required medical attention for an issue high on his left leg. Although he tried to push through the discomfort, his movement dipped as the match went on.
Vacherot capitalized on the moment, taking the first set 6-3 and maintaining control in the second to seal it 6-4. Djokovic, who has battled right ankle, left adductor, and shoulder issues recently, couldn’t regain his rhythm.
A Breakthrough Win for Vacherot
World No. 204 Valentin Vacherot came to Shanghai as a qualifier with little expectation. His victory over Djokovic propelled him into his first-ever Masters 1000 final, marking a career milestone.
“To beat him, I’m not realising, so I cannot put any words on it. This is just crazy. Just to be on the other side of the court was an unbelievable experience,” he said.
“I’ve got so much to learn from this match, from him, and even from myself, I have a lot to give.”
Djokovic Shows Class in Defeat
After the match, Djokovic praised his opponent’s performance and wished him well. “I want to congratulate Valentin for reaching his first Masters final – an amazing story. I told him at the net that he’s had an amazing tournament. His attitude is very good, and his game was amazing. I wish him all the best in the finals. The better player won today.”
Vacherot will face the winner of the second semi-final between Daniil Medvedev and Arthur Rinderknech in Sunday’s title clash.
