Cilic Calls Out ATP Over Hangzhou Open HeatwaveCilic Calls Out ATP Over Hangzhou Open Heatwave

Tennis pushes athletes to their limits with endless matches, travel, and mental pressure. But when extreme weather strikes, determination alone is not enough. At the Hangzhou Open 2025, defending champion Marin Cilic has strongly criticized the ATP, warning that the blistering heat could threaten players’ safety.

The 36-year-old Croatian, who lifted the title last year, is ready to begin his campaign on Wednesday. However, before playing his opening match, he raised concerns about the brutal conditions overshadowing the tournament.

Forecast Warns of Brutal Heat

The opening day in Hangzhou is expected to hit 37 degrees Celsius, creating serious health risks for players. Cilic, outspoken as always, called on the ATP to act quickly and prioritize safety.

On Instagram, he posted a blunt message: “Heat rule in place? [Fingers crossed] everyone stays healthy next two days. All matches should be played under the roof in the stadium with AC – this is dangerous and crazy.”

His statement captured the unease shared by many players who fear the lasting effects of extreme heat.

Heat a Growing Challenge in Tennis

Cilic’s warning reflects a larger problem facing tennis. Long matches under harsh sun can cause dehydration, cramps, and even collapse. Temperatures are expected to fall slightly to 29°C on Thursday, yet the threat will not disappear.

His request for matches to move indoors under air conditioning highlights an urgent call: protect athletes before it’s too late.

Other Players Share Similar Concerns

Cilic’s frustration adds to earlier comments from Iga Swiatek this season. The World No. 2 struggled during Wimbledon’s hottest opening day, where temperatures exceeded 32°C. After beating Polina Kudermetova, she admitted:

“Playing in this heat, I’m glad some clouds came. This day was pretty… I don’t know. I didn’t know how I’m gonna survive it. In tennis we need to be ready for the rain, heat, everything. Especially in UK as you see.”

Cilic Balances Heat and Career Reflections

Beyond his criticism, Cilic has reflected on his career journey. He recently revealed that his famous US Open title run almost never happened. That story showed his resilience in adversity. Now, in Hangzhou, he again prepares for a fight—not only for the trophy but also for the well-being of every player on court.
