Jannik Sinner advanced to the US Open 2025 final after beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Friday night. The Italian star overcame a brief medical timeout to secure victory and now faces Carlos Alcaraz in a historic showdown at Flushing Meadows.
Sinner, the No. 1 seed, will contest his fifth straight Grand Slam final. He will meet world No. 2 Alcaraz, who earlier defeated Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2. This marks the first time in tennis history that two men will meet in three consecutive Grand Slam finals within a single season, according to the ATP.
“It’s a very special day,” Sinner said about Sunday’s matchup. “It’s a very amazing final again.”
Sinner’s Path to the Final
The 24-year-old Italian has dominated the Grand Slam stage in 2025. He won the Australian Open against Alexander Zverev, lost the French Open final to Alcaraz, and then defeated his rival at Wimbledon. At the US Open last year, he beat Taylor Fritz to claim his first title in New York.
Against Auger-Aliassime, Sinner started strong, dominating the first set. His run of 38 consecutive service holds ended in the second when the Canadian struck a 99 mph forehand winner. Auger-Aliassime then sealed the set with a 117 mph ace.
After a medical timeout, Sinner regained control. “Nothing too bad” and “nothing serious,” he said afterward, without giving details.
Match Turning Point
Sinner produced 11 winners and only four errors in the third set. He broke Auger-Aliassime with a stumbling return that landed in, forcing a netted reply. In the fourth, Sinner saved nine of ten break points overall, breaking decisively at 3-2 before closing the match.
Auger-Aliassime, 25, had impressed by beating Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur, and Andrey Rublev earlier in the tournament. However, his first Grand Slam final appearance slipped away.
US Open 2025 Final Set
Sinner now holds 33 wins from his last 34 Grand Slam matches, including an unbeaten run of 27 on hard courts. The US Open 2025 final will also decide the world No. 1 ranking.
Alcaraz and Sinner have split their two Grand Slam finals this season, setting the stage for a thrilling decider. President Donald Trump is expected to be among those in attendance at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.
