Iga Swiatek battled past Italy’s Jasmine Paolini to win the Cincinnati Open 2025 title, securing her 11th WTA 1000 crown. The Pole produced a resilient straight-sets victory, 7-5, 6-4, to become the first Polish player to win a singles title at the hard-court tournament.
Swiatek, who triumphed at Wimbledon last month, has now claimed back-to-back titles this summer. The 24-year-old will enter the US Open as the No. 2 seed behind Aryna Sabalenka, aiming to add to her 2022 Flushing Meadows triumph.
A Hard-Fought Final
Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini made the stronger start, breaking Swiatek early to take a 3-0 lead in the opening set. However, the world No. 2 fought back fiercely, winning five games in a row to seize control.
Although broken while serving for the set at 5-4, Swiatek responded immediately. She broke back at 5-5 and then held to love, clinching the opener 7-5.
Drama in the Second Set
The second set followed a similar pattern, with five breaks of serve exchanged. Once again, Swiatek showed her trademark grit and precision, eventually sealing the contest 7-5, 6-4 in one hour and 49 minutes.
Not known for excelling on faster hard courts, Swiatek admitted surprise at her achievement. “I don’t know why I win the tournaments that we’re like the last ones in terms of what I thought they were going to be,” Swiatek said.
“So, thank you [to my team] for forcing me to become a better player and learn how to play on all these faster surfaces. I’m kind of shocked and super happy, so thank you for the awesome support, to the team and to my family back home.”
A Summer of Success for Swiatek
Following a difficult start to 2025 with no titles, Swiatek has now won Wimbledon and Cincinnati back-to-back. The victory cements her status as one of the top contenders for the upcoming US Open.
Paolini’s Effort and Tribute
Despite defeat, Jasmine Paolini earned praise for her spirited performance. After the match, she acknowledged the fans and sent well wishes to compatriot Jannik Sinner, who had withdrawn from the men’s final earlier in the evening.
But the night ultimately belonged to Iga Swiatek, who continues to prove her dominance across surfaces and enters New York with strong momentum.
