Great Britain made a strong start in the Davis Cup 2025 World Group 1 as Arthur Fery and Cameron Norrie secured crucial singles victories to give their team a 2-0 lead over Poland in Gdynia. One more win will guarantee Britain’s place in February’s first round, keeping hopes alive for the 2026 title.
Fery Shines on Debut
Arthur Fery, ranked 227, stepped in just 24 hours earlier after Jacob Fearnley’s rib injury forced him out. On debut, the 23-year-old displayed maturity, beating Olaf Pieczkowski 6-4, 6-2 to double Britain’s advantage.
“I didn’t really think it [a debut] was going to be this early on in my career, and with my ranking,” Fery said. “Very, very proud to be playing for Great Britain, and hopefully I can do it for many years to come.”
Despite recent injury setbacks that dropped him outside the top 400, Fery’s form has surged. A Wimbledon win over Alexei Popyrin and a Challenger Tour title have boosted his ranking and confidence.
Norrie Battles Through Tight Opener
World number 34 Cameron Norrie was pushed hard by 19-year-old Tomasz Berkieta, ranked 545th, in Friday’s first singles. Norrie saved two break points in his opening service game and then had to rescue set points in a tense tie-break. He eventually edged the set 7-6 (11-9).
With the pressure lifted, Norrie showed composure in the second set, breaking early and holding firm to close out a 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 victory. The 30-year-old’s experience proved decisive as Berkieta faded under pressure.
Britain on the Verge
With two singles wins, Great Britain needs just one more victory on Saturday to seal qualification. The world’s number one doubles pair, Lloyd Glasspool and Julian Cash, will debut in the doubles rubber before two reverse singles.
A win would secure Britain’s place in February’s first round, vital after their 3-2 defeat to Japan earlier this year. That loss left Leon Smith’s side needing to win this tie to avoid a relegation play-off to World Group 2.
Match Summary
| Match | Winner | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Norrie vs Berkieta | Cameron Norrie | 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 |
| Fery vs Pieczkowski | Arthur Fery | 6-4, 6-2 |
With momentum on their side, Britain will look to finish the job in Saturday’s doubles and secure qualification early.
