Emma Raducanu Crashes Out of Canadian OpenEmma Raducanu Crashes Out of Canadian Open

Britain’s Emma Raducanu suffered a crushing defeat at the Canadian Open 2025. She was beaten 6-2, 6-1 by American star Amanda Anisimova in the third round. Raducanu had won both of their previous matches but could not match Anisimova’s pace this time. She held serve just twice and managed only five winners compared to 29 from her opponent.

Anisimova also forced 22 unforced errors from the British number one. The Wimbledon finalist has now won 14 of her last 17 matches. That’s more than any other player in the same period. This victory also marked her 50th win at WTA 1000 events.

Anisimova will face Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina next. Svitolina advanced after beating Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-1.

Naomi Osaka Powers Past Ostapenko, Sevastova Stuns Pegula

Naomi Osaka looked sharp in her 6-2, 6-4 win over 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko. The four-time Grand Slam winner praised her opponent’s return game: “Granted, she broke me a couple times, but she’s a really good returner, so I can’t take that personally,” said Osaka.

Osaka’s next challenge will be Latvia’s Anastasia Sevastova. The 35-year-old stunned defending champion Jessica Pegula with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 comeback. Pegula had won 11 matches in a row in Montreal before the upset.

“It was a weird match for me,” said Pegula. “I felt like I had total control and then I just played a couple of terrible games for, like three games. That totally flipped the momentum of the match, and I went from being up a set and 2-0 to being down very quickly. I don’t really feel like I’m playing great tennis. At times I am, but I feel very up and down, kind of sloppy, which I don’t like. I’ve got to figure it out.”

Sevastova returned from maternity leave in early 2024. This win was her first over a top-five player since 2017.

Rublev and Fritz Advance in Men’s Draw

In the men’s event, Andrey Rublev bounced back after losing the first set. The Russian beat Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Rublev stayed mentally strong throughout the match: “The main thing today, I was able to be mentally really good,” Rublev said. “After the first set, I didn’t [go] down. I was, like, ‘OK, let’s keep fighting, keep being positive’.”

Rublev will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the next round. The Spaniard defeated Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik 6-2, 6-4.

American second seed Taylor Fritz also cruised into the next round. He beat Canadian Gabriel Diallo 6-4, 6-2 in just 75 minutes.
