Zverev Clinches 500th ATP Win at Toronto MastersZverev Clinches 500th ATP Win at Toronto Masters

Top seed Alexander Zverev reached a major career milestone on Thursday by earning his 500th ATP match win with a hard-fought 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-2 comeback victory over Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi at the 2025 Toronto Masters. The German star broke twice in the final set to advance to the fourth round of this key US Open tune-up event.

“It’s a great achievement,” said Zverev, who has lifted 24 ATP titles so far. “Not a lot of players reach this milestone. But I still want 500 more — maybe even more,” he joked. “You always want to win as many matches as possible. I’m all about this.”

Zverev, who also beat Arnaldi earlier this year in Acapulco, will now face Francisco Cerundolo, who downed fellow Argentine Tomas Echeverry 6-3, 6-4.

Michelsen Upsets Musetti, Ruud Gains Revenge

20-year-old American Alex Michelsen made headlines with a breakthrough performance, upsetting third-seeded Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to reach his first-ever Masters 1000 fourth round. Despite hitting nearly 50 unforced errors and converting just two of nine break chances, Michelsen delivered when it mattered.

“It feels really good,” said the 26th-ranked Michelsen. “I’ve put in a lot of hard work and it’s paying off a little bit. I was wondering when it would happen and I guess it is starting to happen right now. I played offensive tennis and executed really well.”

He will now face fellow American Learner Tien, who defeated Reilly Opelka 7-6 (3), 6-3.

Holger Rune, Casper Ruud Move On

Fifth seed Holger Rune continued his strong run with a dominant 6-2, 6-4 win over Frenchman Alexandre Muller. Meanwhile, eighth seed Casper Ruud overcame a slow start to dispatch Portugal’s Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-4. The Norwegian, playing only his fourth match since Roland Garros due to injury, battled back from 4-1 down in the opening set.

“I just crawled into the first set,” Ruud admitted. “I was able to get back into it. One break and things can happen. I raised my return game and got more balls back into play. In the second set I got the break and served my way through.”

Ruud, who lost to Borges at Roland Garros earlier this year, was happy to set the record straight. “It was nice to get my revenge,” he said.

His next opponent will be Karen Khachanov, who rallied to beat American qualifier Emilio Nava 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1. The upcoming clash will be a rematch of their 2022 US Open semi-final, which was won by Ruud.
