Zverev Could Face Fonseca at National Bank Open 2025Zverev Could Face Fonseca at National Bank Open 2025

The 2025 National Bank Open Presented by Rogers promises thrilling early action as top seed Alexander Zverev shares a section of the draw with Brazil’s #NextGenATP star Joao Fonseca. Fans could witness a third-round clash between the 28-year-old German and the 18-year-old breakout star.

Zverev, who won the Montreal title in 2017 and reached the Toronto quarter-finals in 2018, will begin his campaign against Adam Walton or Benjamin Bonzi. If he advances, he could take on Fonseca—who shocked the tennis world with his first Top 10 win against Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open.

Fonseca makes his Toronto debut against a qualifier. A win there will send him into a second-round battle with 32nd seed Matteo Arnaldi.

Zverev’s projected path includes a quarter-final showdown with Holger Rune and a semi-final with Lorenzo Musetti.

Rune, Musetti, and Medvedev Set for Big Matches

Holger Rune might face big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his opener. The Frenchman leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head 1-0. Rune, ranked No. 9 in the PIF ATP Rankings, recently withdrew from Washington due to a back injury but shared good news online: “Feeling much better now and can’t wait to compete again soon,” Rune wrote.

Lorenzo Musetti will meet Juncheng Shang or a qualifier in his first match. He could then face 16th seed Tomas Machac in the Round of 16, and 8th seed Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals.

Daniil Medvedev, the 2021 champion and 10th seed, enters the draw with a potential opening match against Luciano Darderi or a qualifier. He shares the same section as Rune.

Shelton vs. Tiafoe Could Light Up Bottom Half

In the bottom half, American stars Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe may continue their thrilling Lexus ATP Head2Head rivalry in the quarter-finals. Shelton currently leads 2-1, with all matches taking place in the United States. They’re also set to meet this Friday in Washington, which could set the stage for a high-stakes Toronto rematch.

Shelton could battle Flavio Cobolli in the fourth round, while Tiafoe might play Alex de Minaur in the last 16.

Taylor Fritz Eyes Second Masters 1000 Title

Second seed Taylor Fritz begins his title chase against either Camilo Ugo Carabelli or Roberto Carballes Baena. If he moves forward, he might face sixth seed Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals.

Canadian Stars and Defending Champion Highlight Opening Rounds

Felix Auger-Aliassime kicks off his home campaign against Fabian Marozsan or Hugo Dellien, while fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov opens against #NextGenATP American Learner Tien or a qualifier.

Defending champion Alexei Popyrin starts against Laslo Djere or Nicolas Arseneault, looking to repeat last year’s success.

Tournament Expands to 12 Days for First Time

For the first time, the National Bank Open extends across 12 days, starting Sunday and concluding with the final on Thursday, August 7. With explosive matchups, promising #NextGenATP talent, and Canadian favorites in the mix, Toronto is set for world-class tennis action.
