Pierre Gasly Backs Alpine F1 Project With New ContractPierre Gasly Backs Alpine F1 Project With New Contract

The definition of insanity is often described as repeating failure expecting different results. Pierre Gasly’s three-year Alpine F1 contract extension seems to echo that sentiment. Gasly, a grand prix winner and consistent performer, chose to stay with a team battling management reshuffles and years of limited competitiveness.

No Competitive Seats Elsewhere

Gasly’s decision was shaped by the lack of alternative options. McLaren and Ferrari have confirmed lineups, while Mercedes awaits contract signings. Returning to Red Bull would only bring difficult memories. Williams and Sauber are also committed for the near future.

“Of course I did [look elsewhere],” said Gasly after last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix. “It’s just the normal stuff to do. It’s not like it was a no-brainer looking at the performance at the start of the year. There is some thinking behind it.”

Reasons for Optimism at Alpine

Despite a poor start to the current season, Alpine has reorganized with a focus on 2026. Former Ferrari engineer David Sanchez now leads the technical group. Flavio Briatore has strengthened management, while parent company Renault confirmed its F1 commitment.

“But honestly I believe this is a very strong option. Just got to wait and display some good performance from next season.

“I think it’s good to have some clarity and show my commitment on both ends. From the team towards me and me towards the team.

“And with the group of people that I’m working with, I’m feeling in a much better place than I was when I arrived. So I think it’s very clear. I think it [the contract extension] can only be positive for everyone on the team.”

Renault’s Turbulent Return to F1

Renault returned to Formula 1 almost a decade ago as both team owner and engine supplier. The move, rushed through by Bernie Ecclestone, brought back control of the Enstone-based squad. Previously, Renault had won two constructors’ titles there.

However, the team had been drained by Genii Capital under Gerard Lopez. Top engineers left due to financial uncertainty, and facilities lagged behind rivals. Corporate indecision further damaged Renault’s ability to match the timescales of modern F1 success.

Management Instability Slowly Ending

For five years, Alpine suffered through constant leadership changes, giving the impression of crisis. Now, stability appears under the polarizing but influential Flavio Briatore.

Gasly’s extension highlights belief in Alpine’s new structure and Renault’s renewed investment. While critics see stagnation, Gasly views the future with optimism. His gamble reflects hope that Alpine can finally transform years of frustration into sustained competitiveness.
