Toto Wolff has declared Lewis Hamilton as “the greatest of all time” (GOAT) despite his recent self-criticism after a tough Hungarian Grand Prix. Hamilton’s emotional reaction, calling himself “absolutely useless” after a surprising Q2 exit, raised questions about his future in Formula 1.
Hamilton, who started and finished 12th at the Hungarian GP, expressed frustration over his performance, adding that “a lot [is] going on in the background that is not great.” Despite these remarks, Wolff believes Hamilton’s status as the GOAT remains intact.
Wolff: Hamilton Still Has Unfinished Business in F1
“That is Lewis wearing his heart on his sleeve,” Wolff said. “It’s what he thought very much when he was asked after the session. It was very raw. He was doubting himself.”
Wolff continued, emphasizing Hamilton’s emotional transparency and persistence. “We had it in the past when he felt that he underperformed his own expectations. He’s been that emotionally transparent since he was a young boy or a young adult. So, he’s going to beat himself up.”
Wolff reiterated Hamilton’s legacy, stating, “He’s the GOAT and he will always be the GOAT, and nobody is going to take that away.”
Mercedes’ Struggles and the Path to a Potential Eighth Title
Despite recent struggles with Mercedes’ performance since 2022, Wolff sees Hamilton’s potential to return to the top with new regulations in 2024. “Lewis has unfinished business in F1,” Wolff added, reflecting on the changes in the sport’s technical landscape.
Mercedes and Hamilton both struggled with the introduction of ground effect cars, but Wolff remains hopeful for the future. “Brand new cars, completely different to drive, new power units that need an intelligent way of managing the energy. That’s absolutely on for Lewis and I hope he stays on for many more years.”
When asked if Hamilton could still win an eighth title, Wolff remained confident: “If he has a car underneath him that he has confidence in, that does what he wants, then yes.”
However, Wolff acknowledged the challenge of adapting to cars that don’t align with Hamilton’s driving style. “If he has a car that’s not giving him the feedback that he wants, and that was the Mercedes of the past few years, and that seems to be the Ferrari and even worse, then not. But you ask me whether he has it… he definitely has it.”
Wolff’s unwavering belief in Hamilton’s potential suggests the British driver has much left to give in Formula 1. Despite recent struggles, it’s clear that Hamilton’s journey is far from over.
