Oscar Piastri, McLaren’s rising star, reflects on his progress over the past year in Formula 1. Since his first Grand Prix victory in 2024, Piastri believes his 2025 campaign has been full of “a lot more good days.” His growth as a driver has positioned him as a consistent contender, now leading the 2025 World Championship by nine points ahead of teammate Lando Norris.
From Rookie Podiums to Championship Contender
Piastri debuted in F1 with McLaren in 2023, securing two podium finishes. But it was in 2024 when he reached new heights. After his first victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, he won again in Azerbaijan and has now bagged six victories in 2025.
Reflecting on his journey, Piastri said, “I’ve been developing a little bit in a lot of areas. Last year, I felt like I had some weekends that were very strong, but there were a lot of average and sometimes bad days in between.”
“This year has been full of a lot more good days. I have improved as a driver, but I think I’ve been able to get closer to what I think I’m capable of more often,” he added.
Consistency and Speed: The Keys to Winning
Piastri’s growth didn’t come from just one area but from many. He explained, “It’s not come from one specific area. It’s come from looking at lots of different things. Being able to execute my best more often has been the difference.”
Leading the championship in 2025, Piastri faces a tight battle with Norris for the title. Piastri knows that the way to win races remains the same: be faster than everyone else and avoid mistakes.
“You need to be faster than everyone around you and make the least mistakes possible. That aspect doesn’t really change,” Piastri said. “If you’re consistently being beaten, that’s not a recipe for a championship.”
Piastri’s Approach to the Title Fight
With the pressure mounting, Piastri focuses on minimizing mistakes while maintaining speed. “Obviously, if you’re a robot, you’d be able to be as fast as possible and make zero mistakes, but we’re all humans, so that’s not possible.”
As the 2025 season continues, Piastri remains determined. His constant growth and competitive spirit make him a formidable force in the title race.
