Lando Norris is on a mission to etch his name in Formula 1 history by delivering McLaren’s milestone 200th Grand Prix win at the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.
The iconic team’s journey began with a win on June 9, 1968, when founder Bruce McLaren triumphed at Spa-Francorchamps. Since then, legends like Denny Hulme, Emerson Fittipaldi, James Hunt, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Mika Hakkinen, and Lewis Hamilton have contributed to McLaren’s impressive tally of 198 wins.
Now, with just two wins separating the team from the historic 200 mark, Norris hopes to be the driver who clinches the landmark result.
“I would like to be, yeah,” said Norris when asked about his desire to be the one to reach the milestone. “Of course, you always want to be whatever number you can be, but 200 is a big achievement for the team.”
Norris Reflects on McLaren’s Legacy and His Journey
Norris, who currently has eight career wins for McLaren—tied with teammate Oscar Piastri—expressed pride in being part of a team with such a rich racing legacy.
“When you look at the history of who has been in McLaren, the drivers, the championships that have been won, all of these things, then it’s always been an honour for me to be a part of McLaren,” he said.
“I’m lucky to have been part of McLaren since I joined Formula 1. It’s special. I think it’s something I’ll look back on in many years and be very proud of. It’s an amazing team. We’ve improved a lot over the years, and it’s nice that we can start these cool stats again and we can make some history, and add to what McLaren was once achieving many years ago. It’s special, but of course, the number 200 is even more special, and that’s something I would like to be.”
As McLaren continues its resurgence in recent seasons, Norris’ motivation to be the one to bring home this iconic victory underlines both his growth as a driver and the team’s competitive revival. The Hungarian Grand Prix could be a turning point in the team’s 2024 campaign and a moment for the history books.
