Williams driver Alex Albon says he feels “very confident” in Formula 1 2025 as the team enjoys its most consistent season in years. The former Red Bull racer has already scored more points this year than in his previous three Williams campaigns combined. He believes this progress has transformed the way Williams approaches racing.
The British team has made a remarkable turnaround. Once struggling at the back of the grid, Williams now sits comfortably in fifth place with 70 points, holding an 18-point lead over Aston Martin. This success comes after years of hardship, including a last-place finish in 2022 and a winless 2020 campaign.
“We obviously started the year in a really good place,” Albon told Motorsport.com. “And that P5 [in Melbourne] kind of felt like it just it created that great energy, but also settled everyone into like a: ‘Okay, we can do this, we have a good car’.”
Williams’ Rise in 2025
Williams has impressed with strong results this season under Albon and team-mate Carlos Sainz. The team scored three fifth-place finishes, its best since the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix, and achieved four consecutive double-points finishes for the first time since 2016.
“It’s not been a season like others, where we’ve had to take risks and do different things in terms of strategy to get points,” Albon explained. “It’s a nice atmosphere to have, because we’re consistently competitive and we don’t need to take silly risks.”
Consistency Over Risk
Albon stressed that the points this year are not due to unusual conditions or risky calls. Instead, Williams has relied on steady pace and a balanced car. “Like, if you think about Spa, Melbourne and Silverstone, when there were these crazy mixed-conditions races, we didn’t do anything crazy. We were very sensible in our choices, and we managed good points.”
Behind the Progress
The revival began with a shift in car philosophy ahead of 2024, followed by extensive development work from the engineers. The effort produced a consistent car capable of fighting in the midfield.
“Now we’ve moved up, and we’ve got a consistent car, we’re the most consistent midfield car, I’d like to say,” Albon said. “And then, in terms of your mindset going into every race, there’s no kind of [feeling that] this is one that we’ve got to maximise everything. It’s like, okay, let’s see how this weekend goes. If we just do our thing, we’re going to be okay.”
Williams’ climb from ninth in 2024 to fifth in 2025 highlights its steady return to form. With Albon leading the charge, the team now looks set for its strongest season in nearly a decade.
