Son Heung-min, the former Tottenham Hotspur captain, has joined Los Angeles FC (LAFC) for a record MLS transfer fee exceeding £20m. The 33-year-old South Korean forward’s two-year contract comes with an option for an additional two years.
A Life-Changing Call from LAFC’s President
In an exclusive interview, Son admitted that joining LAFC was not initially his “first choice.” However, a conversation with LAFC co-president John Thorrington changed his mind, leading to the star’s transfer. Son said, “If I’m honest, it was not my first choice. But the first call I had with [John] after my season finished, he changed my mind, changed my heart, my brain.”
Despite his initial reservations, Son now expresses excitement for the move, stating, “I’m here, I’m more than happy, I’m so excited.” This transfer marks a significant moment in Major League Soccer, as the fee paid to Tottenham surpasses the previous MLS record of £16.5m, set by Atlanta United for Emmanuel Latte Lath in 2024.
Son’s Vision for Los Angeles FC and MLS Glory
Son Heung-min is thrilled to be in Los Angeles, a city with a rich sporting history. In a press release, Son shared, “Los Angeles has such a rich history of champions, and I am here to help write the next chapter. I’m excited for this new challenge in MLS. I have come to LA to lift trophies and give everything for this club, this city, and its fans.”
Currently, LAFC sits sixth in the MLS Western Conference, with Son reuniting with his former Tottenham teammate, Hugo Lloris. Son’s arrival comes after an illustrious career at Tottenham, where he scored 173 goals in 454 appearances since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.
His departure follows a memorable final appearance for Spurs, in a 1-1 pre-season friendly against Newcastle in Seoul, South Korea. Son had captained Tottenham to their first trophy in 17 years, lifting the Europa League in May.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy paid tribute to the South Korean star, stating, “Sonny is one of the greatest players to ever wear the famous Lilywhite shirt… He’s not just a gifted footballer, but an incredible human being who has touched hearts all over the world.”
Son’s move to LAFC signifies the end of a remarkable chapter at Tottenham, but the beginning of an exciting new journey in the MLS. His commitment to LAFC reflects his desire to continue achieving at the highest level and help elevate the team to new heights.
