Manchester United are intensifying their hunt for a new striker. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins are leading the shortlist. Meanwhile, Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard may be on his way out, and Liverpool’s Tyler Morton is attracting serious interest from Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais.
Manchester United Consider Sesko and Watkins
The Red Devils want to strengthen their attack. They are considering Sesko or Watkins as top options.
According to the Evening Standard: “Manchester United have identified Benjamin Sesko and Ollie Watkins as their top targets for a striker signing this summer. United remain keen to sign a striker but sales could be required first.”
To fund a move, United may need to sell players. Names like Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, and Antony are on the chopping block.
Marcus Rashford’s loan to Barcelona, where the Spanish club covers his wages, has helped ease financial pressure. “Reports suggest that United believe they could agree a deal for between £40m-£45m for the 29-year-old, less than the Gunners offered at the start of the year. Sesko would be a more expensive option for United than Watkins. Leipzig are likely to demand a fee of around £70m to consider a sale.”
United Interested in Goalkeeper Nick Pope
Manchester United are also considering a new goalkeeper. Newcastle’s Nick Pope is a surprise target.
As The Sun reports: “Manchester United could make a shock transfer move for Nick Pope. The goalkeeper has excelled with Newcastle, but Eddie Howe is now reportedly targeting Southampton’s Aaron Ramsdale.
As a result, Pope, 33, who has made ten England appearances, now faces the prospect of being displaced by rival Ramsdale. As he is out of contract next summer, he is also likely to prove an affordable option for the Red Devils.”
Pope could be a cost-effective addition, given his contract situation.
Arsenal’s Trossard Hesitant on Contract Extension
Leandro Trossard’s future at Arsenal looks uncertain. The Belgian forward is stalling on a new contract.
As per The Mirror: “Leandro Trossard is stalling over signing the new contract that is being offered by Arsenal because he wants to keep his options open… The situation could come to a head soon.”
Trossard joined from Brighton in January 2023 and has made an impact. He’s contributed 28 goals and 23 assists in 124 games.
Arsenal’s recent signings—Gyokeres, Madueke, Mosquera, Zubimendi, Kepa, and Norgaard—increase competition in the squad. “Arsenal have been chasing new signings all summer… But they could still sign another wide forward wanted by Arteta – and that is partly why Trossard is reluctant to show his hand yet.”
“The 30-year-old won’t put pen to paper on a contract that would improve his wages at Arsenal, but not extend his stay beyond 2027.”
Lyon in Talks for Liverpool’s Tyler Morton
Olympique Lyonnais have contacted Liverpool over a move for Tyler Morton. The 22-year-old midfielder is open to a switch.
As The Athletic notes: “Liverpool have had contact from French club Lyon over a deal for Tyler Morton. The 22-year-old would be open to a move to the Ligue 1 club as it would offer him a chance to progress in his career.
Liverpool and the midfielder, who has attracted interest from other European clubs, would be interested in a permanent move.”
Morton wants more first-team chances. A permanent transfer could benefit both him and Liverpool, who are looking to raise funds.
