Tottenham, Manchester City, and Sunderland recorded impressive victories on the opening weekend of the Premier League 2025 season. Tottenham manager Thomas Frank enjoyed a dream home debut as Spurs cruised to a 3-0 win over Burnley. Manchester City displayed fresh energy in a 4-0 demolition of Wolves, while newly promoted Sunderland shocked West Ham with a 3-0 victory.
Tottenham off to flying start under Thomas Frank
Thomas Frank began his Tottenham journey with a 3-0 triumph at home against Burnley. Richarlison scored twice, first converting Mohammed Kudus’ cross and then netting a spectacular bicycle kick from another Kudus delivery. Brennan Johnson, Tottenham’s Europa League final hero, added the third after racing clear.
“Perfect start or dream start. A good performance against a difficult opponent. I will just enjoy it and I hope the players, the club and the fans enjoy it because that is important,” Frank said.
Haaland and Reijnders shine for Manchester City
Manchester City made a statement with a 4-0 victory at Wolves. Erling Haaland scored twice, but new signing Tijjani Reijnders stole the spotlight. The Dutch midfielder contributed to all three opening goals before scoring one himself.
“We knew he is a top signing for the coming years for City,” Pep Guardiola said on Reijnders’ Premier League debut after his £46.5 million move from AC Milan.
Rayan Cherki, another summer recruit from Lyon, capped the win with a fourth goal. Guardiola’s side looked determined to bounce back after finishing third last season.
Sunderland stun West Ham on top-flight return
Sunderland, back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017, marked their return with a stunning 3-0 win over West Ham. Eliezer Mayenda opened the scoring with a looping header before Dan Ballard and Wilson Isidor sealed the result.
Former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka was among the notable new signings, but Sunderland’s promotion heroes proved decisive. The Black Cats signaled their intent to avoid the fate of previous promoted teams who were relegated immediately.
Newcastle, Fulham held to draws
Newcastle failed to score in a 0-0 draw against 10-man Aston Villa. The absence of Alexander Isak, who is pushing for a move to Liverpool, overshadowed the game. Eddie Howe urged for a swift resolution.
“From my perspective, you want a resolution quickly. It’s taking away the focus of the players and the supporters,” Howe said.
Fulham rescued a 1-1 draw at Brighton with Rodrigo Muniz scoring in the 96th minute after Matt O’Riley’s penalty.
Arsenal face Manchester United on Sunday, while champions Liverpool started with a 4-2 win over Bournemouth on Friday.
