Cardiff City midfielder Rubin Colwill believes his side has what it takes to defeat Wrexham in the upcoming EFL Cup encounter, especially after their morale-boosting win against Premier League club Burnley in the previous round.

The all-Welsh showdown at Stok Cae Ras on Tuesday (20:00 BST) marks their first meeting in 21 years. Cardiff head into the clash sitting at the top of League One, sharing points with Stevenage and Bradford City, and eager to extend their winning run in cup competitions.

“I think Burnley was really good for us. We played a Premier League team, played really well and beat them. That gives us a lot of confidence that we can beat teams in higher leagues than us, not just in League One,” said Colwill.

Bluebirds Determined to Keep Their Momentum

Cardiff suffered a narrow defeat against Bolton on Saturday after Amario Cozier-Duberry scored a last-minute stunner, marking their third league loss of the season. However, the squad has already shifted focus to their highly anticipated Welsh clash with Wrexham.

The 23-year-old midfielder described the upcoming match as a “semi-derby,” emphasizing the pride and excitement that come with facing another Welsh side.

“It’s exciting, they’re a division higher than us now so it adds that extra bit of emphasis on the game. It is going to be a test, but we’re all looking forward to it.

“It’s probably a semi-derby as it’s a long way away but there’s not many Welsh clubs in the English system. So anytime you come across one it’s always going to be a bit of a rivalry and it’s another Welsh team that we can try and beat.”

Colwill on Wrexham’s Rise and Cardiff’s Focus

The Wales international acknowledged the rise of Wrexham, calling their journey inspiring for Welsh football and the local community.

“It’s brilliant for Welsh football and for the people of Wrexham,” he said, appreciating their progress under new ownership. Yet, Colwill made it clear that Cardiff’s focus remains solely on the match itself.

He added, “The story will make no difference to us when we travel to north Wales. We’re focused on reaching the EFL Cup quarter-finals and knocking out our Welsh rivals in the process.”

Cardiff Ready for the Challenge

Following their shock win over Burnley and strong league form, Cardiff City approach this match brimming with belief. Their dynamic gameplay and determination could make the difference as they seek another statement victory in the EFL Cup 2025.

With Welsh pride on the line, fans can expect an intense and emotional contest as the Bluebirds aim to soar past Wrexham and continue their dream run in the tournament.
