Paris Saint-Germain lifted the UEFA Super Cup 2025 after a thrilling 4-3 penalty shoot-out win over Tottenham Hotspur. The European champions fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 in Udine before sealing the victory from the spot. This marks PSG’s first-ever Super Cup triumph and the first for any French club.
Tottenham, in their first competitive match under new coach Thomas Frank, led 2-0 just after halftime. Micky van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute, and Cristian Romero doubled the advantage three minutes after the break.
Late Substitutions Spark PSG’s Comeback
PSG turned the game around with two late goals from substitutes. Lee Kang-in struck in the 85th minute, and Goncalo Ramos headed home the equaliser four minutes into stoppage time.
The shoot-out began poorly for PSG as Vitinha missed, but debut goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved from Van de Ven, and Mathys Tel fired wide. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee converted for PSG before Nuno Mendes slotted the decisive penalty.
Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro scored for Spurs, but it wasn’t enough.
Marquinhos Praises Mental Strength and Tactics
“I am proud. We have hadn’t much preparation but you could see that football is not only about the physical aspect — it is also about the mental aspect, being in the right place, having the right tactics,” PSG captain Marquinhos told Canal Plus. “They sat back a lot after going 2-0 up and it is dangerous to invite PSG to come at you like that.”
Luis Enrique’s side had only returned to training a week ago after losing the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea last month. They now face Nantes away in Ligue 1 on Sunday, while Spurs host Burnley in their Premier League opener on Saturday.
Frank handed debuts to Mohammed Kudus and Joao Palhinha, while Chevalier started in goal for PSG following his move from Lille. The 23-year-old impressed with key saves but was beaten for both Tottenham goals before PSG’s dramatic comeback.
Bradley Barcola had an effort disallowed midway through the second half, but Lee’s precise strike and Ramos’s injury-time header forced penalties, completing a perfect start to PSG’s 2025 campaign.
