Nuno Espirito Santo’s Premier League journey with West Ham began with a spirited 1-1 draw against Everton on Monday. The Hammers showed grit and determination under their new manager, battling back from an early setback to earn a crucial point away from home.
The hosts took the lead in the 18th minute after exposing West Ham’s shaky backline. James Garner swung in a precise cross from the left flank, and Michael Keane’s well-placed header found the net. It was Everton’s 361st headed goal in Premier League history — a figure matched only by Manchester United.
Despite their strong start, Everton, who remain unbeaten at the newly built Hill Dickinson Stadium, failed to extend their advantage. Their missed chances allowed West Ham to gain confidence and momentum as the match progressed.
Bowen’s Second-Half Strike Rescues a Point
After the break, West Ham looked far more composed and began pushing Everton deeper into their own half. Their persistence paid off when captain Jarrod Bowen produced a precise left-footed finish 20 minutes into the second half to make it 1-1. The strike was also notable as it became the first goal Everton have conceded at their new ground.
“I just tried to get into the box and I know what I am going to do before the defenders do,” Bowen said.
“It is a big point for us. It is a fair result. Shows the character of the team going down 1-0. We spoke at halftime that it was only one goal and whether it took us up to 90 minutes we knew we would get our own chances.”
Everton Left Frustrated After Missed Opportunities
Although Everton had spells of control, they struggled to create clear-cut chances to reclaim the lead. The home side’s inability to score again left them with a sense of frustration after the final whistle.
“Disappointed we didn’t take all three points,” Everton coach David Moyes said. “It was a home game and an opportunity for us. We had moments we should have pushed the button a bit more to get the second goal.”
The result leaves West Ham second from bottom with four points from their opening six matches, while Everton sit ninth with eight points. For Nuno Espirito Santo, the fightback offered an encouraging glimpse of the resilience he will aim to build upon in the coming weeks.
