Liverpool have officially announced the signing of French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt in a £69 million deal, with an additional £10 million in potential add-ons. The 23-year-old’s arrival pushes Liverpool’s summer transfer spending past £250 million, reinforcing their attacking lineup after the tragic death of Diogo Jota in a car crash in Spain.
“The 23-year-old has successfully completed a medical and agreed personal terms with the Reds, allowing him to fly out to Hong Kong to join his new teammates on their pre-season tour of Asia later this week,” Liverpool confirmed in an official statement on Wednesday.
Liverpool turned their attention to Ekitike after Newcastle United refused to sell Swedish forward Alexander Isak, who is valued at £150 million. The Reds reportedly beat out both Manchester United and Newcastle to secure one of Europe’s most promising young forwards.
Ekitike’s Journey: From PSG Struggles to Bundesliga Breakthrough
Ekitike made headlines last season after scoring 22 goals in 48 appearances for Frankfurt, earning a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Season. Frankfurt finished third in Germany’s top flight, largely thanks to Ekitike’s consistent performances.
He began his professional career at Stade de Reims and spent a short loan spell in Denmark before earning a high-profile move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2022. However, competing alongside Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Neymar limited his playing time. A loan move to Frankfurt revitalized his career.
“Hugo has improved tremendously in his 18 months with us and has been a real asset to our team and the club as a whole on and off the pitch,” said Eintracht Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krosche.
“We’re delighted he can now take the next step – a step he has earned through his performances with us.”
Liverpool’s signing spree under new manager Arne Slot includes high-profile acquisitions such as:
-
Florian Wirtz (£116 million)
-
Defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez
-
Goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia
The club is also open to offloading Darwin Nunez, while rejecting a bid from Bayern Munich for Luis Diaz.
Ekitike will now link up with Liverpool in Hong Kong as the Reds prepare for their upcoming season without Diogo Jota and with renewed ambitions in attack.
