Djed Spence Earns England Call-Up as First Muslim PlayerDjed Spence Earns England Call-Up as First Muslim Player

Tottenham full-back Djed Spence has been named in the England squad, marking a historic moment. The 25-year-old could become the first Muslim player to represent the senior England men’s team in World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Serbia.

“It’s a blessing – it’s just amazing. I don’t have the words really,” said Spence. The call-up caps a remarkable turnaround for Spence, who was sent out on loan three times before cementing his place at Spurs.

Faith and Inspiration

Spence highlighted how his faith has guided him through challenges. “I pray a lot, I give gratitude to God. In the toughest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I’ve always believed that God has always been by my side. It’s a big thing for me, my faith.”

He also shared his message for future generations. “If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it.”

How Djed Spence Earned His England Call-Up

Before December 15 last year, Spence had played only 64 minutes of Premier League football. After that date, he completed 90 minutes in 19 of Spurs’ next 22 league games.

The defender’s resurgence began after being excluded from Spurs’ Europa League group stage squad. He later starred in the knockout stage, playing 180 minutes in the last-16 win against AZ Alkmaar.

Spence also featured as a substitute in Tottenham’s win over Manchester United in the final, securing the club’s first major trophy in 17 years.

Such performances put him on England’s radar last March, but Arsenal teenager Myles Lewis-Skelly was chosen instead. Despite this, Spence continued to impress, leading Premier League stats in tackles, interceptions, clearances, blocks, and defensive headers.

Manager and Team Support

“It’s definitely a big deal to play for England, 100%,” Spence said. “The manager has made me feel comfortable, everyone here has made me comfortable. Also I’ve played at under-21s, so I know a bit more. But senior level, I haven’t done it before. The boys have made me feel welcome and taken me in.”

Early England Experience

Spence made his England Under-21 debut under Lee Carsley in 2022 against Albania. Although injury kept him out of the 2023 European Under-21 Championship, Carsley always rated him highly.

“I love Djed. I think he’s such a good player,” Carsley told BBC Sport earlier this year. “So exciting, so attacking, athletic, a quiet guy but humble.

“He’s got so many attributes, the way he can drive and dribble with the ball, score, create, defend. He’s a player that there’s no ceiling where he could go.”

What Lies Ahead

England face Andorra at Villa Park on Saturday, followed by Serbia in Belgrade on Tuesday. With his faith, determination, and strong form for Spurs, Spence is ready to seize the opportunity and inspire the next generation.
