Barcelona Reinstates Ter Stegen as CaptainBarcelona Reinstates Ter Stegen as Captain

Barcelona has reinstated goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen as the club’s captain after resolving a dispute over his fitness. The issue arose after the German goalkeeper underwent back surgery in late July, sparking a row with the club.

Disciplinary Action and Resolution

Local media reported that Barcelona initially stripped Ter Stegen of his captaincy after he allegedly refused to cooperate in releasing his medical details. This prompted disciplinary action. The club had sought to classify Ter Stegen’s injury as long-term, which would have allowed them to reduce part of his pay from their official wage bill. However, Barcelona later confirmed regarding the resolution of the dispute.

Ter Stegen Defends Himself on Social Media

Ter Stegen responded to the situation on social media and defended his actions. “In recent weeks, many things have been said about me – some of them entirely unfounded,” he wrote on Instagram. “Therefore, I feel it is necessary to express my version of events respectfully, yet clearly.”

“I am fully willing to collaborate with the club’s management to resolve this matter and to provide the requested authorisation,” Ter Stegen added.

With the new La Liga season fast approaching, Barcelona faces pressure to comply with Spain’s financial fair play regulations. If the club fails, they may not be able to register new players for the upcoming campaign.

Surgery Decision and Commitment to Barcelona

Ter Stegen explained his surgery decision, emphasizing that the club fully approved it. “I would also like to clarify that all of the club’s signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery,” Ter Stegen wrote. “The decision to undergo surgery was fully approved by the club, and always with the intention of prioritising my health and long-term sporting career, which of course aligns with those of FCB.”

He also pointed out that his surgery should not affect the registration of new players. “My commitment to these colors remains absolute,” Ter Stegen concluded.

Barcelona’s goalkeeper position is now under threat from summer signings, including 24-year-old Joan Garcia and veteran Wojciech Szczesny, who extended his contract after stepping in for Ter Stegen during last season’s Liga-winning campaign.
