Aaron Ramsey is an injury doubt for Wales’ friendly against England and their crucial World Cup qualifier against Belgium next week. The 34-year-old midfielder was left out of Pumas UNAM’s 2-1 defeat to Guadalajara in Liga MX on Monday, raising concerns for Wales boss Craig Bellamy.
Reports from Mexico say Ramsey, recalled to the national squad last week, felt “discomfort” during training on Thursday and missed Friday’s preparations. The former Arsenal star has not featured for Wales since suffering a hamstring injury in their Nations League win over Montenegro in September 2024. It remains unclear whether he will return to Wales or continue rehabilitation in Mexico.
Ramsey missed five months of Cardiff City’s relegation campaign with a similar injury. He moved to Pumas in the summer and has scored once in six appearances. He has struggled with leg injuries throughout his 19-year career, including spells at Juventus and Nice. His latest setback is a major concern for Bellamy, who recently said, “there’s still football in Ramsey.”
Mixed Weekend for Bellamy’s Wales Squad
While Ramsey’s status remains uncertain, most of Bellamy’s squad were in action over the weekend ahead of their high-profile fixtures against England on 9 October and Belgium on 13 October.
David Brooks captained Bournemouth in their Premier League clash with Fulham. He was substituted after 85 minutes. Harry Wilson was taken off after 67 minutes. In the Championship, Kieffer Moore started for Wrexham in a draw against Birmingham City. Nathan Broadhead and Lewis Koumas appeared as substitutes.
Three Leeds United players, Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon, and Ethan Ampadu, featured in a 2-1 loss to Tottenham. Ampadu survived a VAR check that resulted in a yellow card. Brennan Johnson was introduced in stoppage time, while Ben Davies remained on the bench. Neco Williams started for Nottingham Forest in a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle.
Elsewhere, Ben Cabango and Liam Cullen played in Swansea’s 3-1 loss to Leicester, with Jordan James starting for the Foxes. Dylan Lawlor, Ronan Kpakio, and Joel Colwill impressed for Cardiff in a 4-3 win over Leyton Orient. Chris Mepham featured in West Brom’s 3-0 defeat to Millwall, while Jay Dasilva helped Coventry thrash Sheffield Wednesday 5-0. Sorba Thomas provided an assist for Stoke in a 1-1 draw with Blackburn.
Bellamy Faces Nervous Wait
Craig Bellamy will hope Ramsey recovers quickly as Wales prepare for a vital international window. The veteran midfielder’s absence would be a major blow as Wales aim to perform strongly against England at Wembley and Belgium in Cardiff.
