Shubman Gill has broken his silence on the much-discussed topic of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to domestic cricket. The two senior batters starred in India’s nine-wicket win over Australia in the third ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground but remain under the scanner ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Rohit smashed 121 while Kohli added 74 as they stitched together a 168-run unbeaten partnership. Their dominant display has reignited conversations about their future in ODIs — and whether they’ll play the Vijay Hazare Trophy to keep themselves match-ready.
Gill Confirms Discussions on Vijay Hazare
Shubman Gill, India’s ODI captain, hinted that a call could be made soon regarding their participation in domestic cricket.
“There’s not much gap left for the South Africa series. There’s a bit of a gap between the South Africa and New Zealand series. Will have discussions after the South Africa series,” said Gill.
With no ODIs scheduled between December 2025 and January 2026, the Vijay Hazare Trophy could be the ideal platform for Rohit and Kohli to stay sharp and silence doubts about their form and fitness.
Selector’s Message Looms Large
Earlier, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar emphasized that centrally contracted players should represent their state sides whenever the calendar allows. His comments were interpreted as a clear message to senior players like Rohit and Kohli to play domestic cricket.
Both had previously opted out of the India A series against Australia A before heading Down Under, a decision that raised questions about their workload management and match readiness.
Gill on Learning from the Seniors
Gill credited the experienced duo for guiding him in his early days as ODI captain.
“Having Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma help me as a captain. I can ask them anything whenever I have any doubts on the field,” said Gill.
India Dominate Sydney ODI
India’s bowlers laid the foundation by bowling out Australia for 236. Harshit Rana grabbed four wickets and Washington Sundar picked two. Rohit and Kohli then produced a chasing clinic, sealing the match with 69 balls to spare.
Road to 2027 World Cup
As the 2027 ODI World Cup approaches, the spotlight on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s commitment to ODI cricket continues to grow. Whether they feature in the Vijay Hazare Trophy could become a key indicator of their long-term plans.
