Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal have signed striker Darwin Nunez from Liverpool. The 26-year-old Uruguay forward agreed to a three-year contract, subject to international clearance. Nunez spent three seasons at Liverpool after joining from Benfica in 2022.
Liverpool announced on their official website: “The 2024/25 term turned out to be his final one with The Reds, and he would complete his career on Merseyside by hoisting the Premier League trophy aloft. Nunez’s pair of stoppage-time finishes to snatch victory away at Brentford in January was an undoubted vital moment and highlight of the historic season. Everybody at the club would like to thank Darwin for his contributions and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
Impact on Liverpool and Al Hilal’s Strengthened Squad
Nunez’s transfer fee is reported to be £46.3 million. Liverpool strengthened their attack by signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. Nunez made 143 appearances and scored 40 goals during his time at Liverpool.
In the 2024/25 Premier League season, Nunez started only eight matches and scored five goals. Manager Arne Slot criticized Nunez’s work-rate in February, saying he “can’t accept” the forward’s effort levels. This likely influenced Liverpool’s decision to let him go.
At Al Hilal, Nunez will join former Premier League stars Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo, Aleksandar Mitrovic, and Kalidou Koulibaly. Al Hilal finished second in the Saudi Pro League last season, eight points behind Al-Ittihad.
Liverpool had rejected a January offer from Saudi side Al Nassr for Nunez. His exit may affect Liverpool’s pursuit of Alexander Isak. Newcastle United rejected Liverpool’s opening £110 million offer.
Darwin Nunez’s move to Al Hilal marks a key moment for his career. It also highlights the Saudi Pro League’s rise in attracting top players.
