Former Indian fast bowler RP Singh has urged careful workload management for pacer Mohammed Siraj, stressing the need to keep him injury-free, similar to Jasprit Bumrah’s approach. Siraj played a crucial role in India’s recent 2-2 draw in the five-match Test series against England, finishing as the highest wicket-taker with 23 wickets.
“Workload management will be crucial to prevent Siraj from getting injured in the future,” Singh told PTI-Bhasha. He added, “Fast bowlers are at higher risk of injury when they play too many matches in a short time. His workload should be managed just like we did with Bumrah.”
Singh emphasized the importance of Siraj’s fitness, citing Bumrah’s success due to proper workload management. “It’s because of better workload management, Jasprit Bumrah bowled brilliantly in both ODI and T20 World Cups,” Singh explained.
Siraj’s Role in India’s England Victory
Singh, who represented India in 82 matches, praised Mohammed Siraj’s performance during the England series. “Siraj was the only bowler who played all five Tests and bowled with full energy and intensity in each match,” Singh added. Siraj’s efforts included a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the fifth Test, playing a pivotal role in India’s six-run victory.
Singh was also impressed with Siraj’s consistency throughout the series. “The last ball of the series, which bowled out the batsman, was one of his top five fastest deliveries in the series,” said Singh. Siraj bowled a 143 kmph yorker to clean up Gus Atkinson, sealing India’s victory.
Singh highlighted Siraj’s critical role, saying, “This shows that he never lacked effort. He focused on bowling with the right line and length and contributed beyond expectations for the team.”
Siraj and Bumrah’s Partnership in the Bowling Attack
In addition to Siraj’s performance, Singh spoke about how Bumrah’s leadership has impacted Siraj’s success. “Just like batsmen need partnerships, bowlers also prefer bowling in pairs,” Singh said. He noted, “Siraj’s role is to build pressure from his end, and he does that very well. Their partnership has been special and delivered great performances.”
Singh also addressed the debate over Bumrah’s workload, emphasizing that his limited appearances were planned. “The good thing about Bumrah is that whenever he’s in the team, he gives you wickets,” Singh remarked. “Captains always expect breakthroughs from him.”
Praise was also given to Shubman Gill, who captained India during the series. Singh acknowledged, “Gill was impressive as captain. He made good decisions and his personal performance was outstanding.”
Injury Replacement Policy in International Cricket
Finally, Singh suggested that injury replacements should be allowed for players, especially in cases where injuries occur during a match. “There should be a neutral doctor or physio during every match who decides the severity of a player’s injury,” Singh suggested.
