Luis Diaz has officially joined Bayern Munich in a £65.5 million deal, ending his three-and-a-half-year stint with Liverpool. The Colombian international signed a four-year contract with the Bundesliga champions.
Liverpool had rejected Bayern’s opening bid of £58.6 million. But the improved offer was accepted over the weekend. Diaz was then allowed to undergo a medical with the German club.
He missed Liverpool’s pre-season match against AC Milan due to the ongoing transfer talks. His exit closes a chapter filled with silverware and standout performances.
Diaz Reflects on Liverpool Journey and Jota Tribute
In an emotional Instagram post, Diaz wrote: “I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together. I have met incredible people, fabulous colleagues, coaches who helped me a lot, and extraordinary fans.
“Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart. It’s good to be leaving with the feeling of a duty fulfilled, and, most of all, to be leaving a champion. It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of ours in such a tragic way.
“I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him. We will never forget him. Thank you for everything.”
The heartfelt farewell came in the wake of the tragic death of teammate Diogo Jota earlier this month.
A Key Player for Liverpool
Diaz joined Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 for £37 million. He scored 41 goals in 148 matches. His impact was immediate and lasting.
In the Premier League, Diaz led Liverpool in dribbles completed (186) and fouls won (111). He ranked second in goals (29), goal involvements (44), touches in the opposition box (589), and duels won (459). He also won possession in the final third 70 times—second most in the squad.
Last season, Diaz had his best campaign, netting 17 goals in all competitions. He often played as a false nine, a role in which he thrived. His hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in November was a highlight.
Who Fills the Void?
Cody Gakpo is the likely successor on the left wing. The Dutchman scored 18 goals last season but is less effective at dribbling through tight spaces.
Youngster Rio Ngumoha, who turns 17 soon, impressed during pre-season. He may get more chances in Diaz’s absence. New signing Hugo Ekitike can also play on the left, though he is expected to feature more as a striker.
Liverpool’s biggest hope could be Florian Wirtz. The German midfielder, known for both flair and work rate, may fill Diaz’s pressing role. He won possession in the final third 71 times over the last two Bundesliga seasons—more than anyone else.
Luis Diaz departs as a champion. His energy, goals, and heart leave a lasting legacy at Anfield.
