Geneva, July 21, 2025 — England are just one step away from the Women’s Euro 2025 final. After their dramatic quarter-final win over Sweden, the Lionesses will face Italy in Tuesday’s semi-final in Geneva. If they win, they’ll face either Germany or Spain in Sunday’s final.
England’s Comeback Sets the Tone
In the quarter-finals, England pulled off a stunning escape. They trailed 2-0 late in the match but struck twice within three minutes to force extra time. Eventually, they edged out Sweden 3-2 in a nerve-wracking penalty shoot-out.
“I really had a sense throughout the game, even when we were down, that it wasn’t our time to go,” said Esme Morgan.
“I thought about three times we were out,” added head coach Sarina Wiegman.
Wiegman now has a chance to win a third straight Women’s Euros title. She won with the Netherlands in 2017 and with England in 2022.
Six Semis in a Row
This marks England’s sixth straight semi-final appearance in major tournaments. Despite a loss to France and a poor first half against Sweden, they found their rhythm just in time.
Substitutes Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly made a huge impact during the comeback. Their energy and goals revitalized the team.
Strong Record Against Italy
England enter the semi-final as clear favourites. They beat Italy 5-1 in a friendly last year and 2-1 in the 2023 Arnold Clark Cup.
Italy, ranked 13th in the world, have exceeded expectations. They finished second in their group behind Spain and defeated Norway 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Veteran Cristiana Girelli scored twice, including the last-minute winner. “It’s exciting because we are going to face the reigning champions,” said Italian defender Martina Lenzini.
“Getting to the semi-finals for us is a result in itself, a bit unexpected in the eyes of others and by everyone around us, but we believed we could do this. We are always humble but we were aware that we could get to this stage and have the chance to face a team of this calibre.”
Jess Carter Faces Racial Abuse
As England prepare for the match, defender Jess Carter has shared a distressing experience. She revealed online that she has faced racial abuse since the tournament began. “From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse,” Carter wrote on social media.
“Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result I don’t agree or think it’s OK to target someone’s appearance or race.”
The English FA confirmed that they have reported the abuse to the police.
Fitness Boost: Leah Williamson Recovery Hopes
Captain Leah Williamson had to leave the field with an ankle injury during the Sweden match. However, the team remains hopeful she’ll return in time. “We’re very optimistic that Leah will be fine,” said Morgan.
