Navdeep Saini Discusses IPL Path to Team IndiaNavdeep Saini Discusses IPL Path to Team India

Navdeep Saini has opened up on how the Indian Premier League now overshadows domestic cricket in national selection. According to the experienced pacer, strong IPL showings put players in the spotlight faster than any other tournament.

Saini, who has represented India in 2 Tests, 8 ODIs, and 11 T20Is, last played for the national team in 2021. Despite consistent Ranji Trophy efforts, he feels that selectors now prioritize IPL performances when picking squads.

“Yes, whether one likes it or not, to play for India, you have to do well in the IPL. It is a reality. A year before, I had a shoulder injury and my pace dropped—it cost me an IPL contract,” he admitted.

Playing With Heart, Not Fear

The Delhi pacer spoke openly after the Ranji match against Himachal Pradesh, reflecting on his mindset and journey.

“Main jab aaya tha mere paas khone ko kuch nahi tha aur itne saal baad aaj bhi khone ko kuch nahi hai. Main agar India comeback ka sapna na dekhoon mujhe haq nahi Delhi team mein ek jagah rok ke rakhne ki,” Saini told reporters.

At 33, he continues to charge in with the same fire as before. While opportunities have become limited, his passion for red-ball cricket remains strong.

Comeback Dream Still Alive

When asked if he would focus only on white-ball formats, he said his love for the longer game keeps him going. “Yes, I can but I love this challenge of bowling in days’ games. Mujhe mazaa aata hai. Last match, I didn’t get wickets (in Hyderabad) as the wicket was slow. On this track, post-tea, it became lively,” he explained.

“Why not? If I have a couple of fifers, I will again be part of the discussions,” Saini added, making it clear that his India dream isn’t over yet.
