Suzie Bates has heaped praise on India captain Harmanpreet Kaur ahead of the crucial India vs New Zealand ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 encounter at DY Patil Stadium on Thursday. The result will play a defining role in deciding the last semifinal berth.
India currently holds the fourth position on the points table with two victories and three defeats. The hosts are under pressure after consecutive losses to South Africa, Australia, and England. Meanwhile, New Zealand trails in fifth place with four points, having faced two defeats and two washouts that hurt their campaign.
Bates on Harmanpreet’s Competitive Edge
Speaking to JioStar, Bates opened up on Kaur’s leadership and energy, saying, “Harmanpreet has been around for a long time. Every time I have been around, it has been up against her, and she is ultra-competitive and feisty. That brings the best out in her and her teammates. Her teammates know that when she is on the field, she leads the fight and ensures they compete for every ball. Smriti’s (Mandhana) calmness complements Harmanpreet’s aggression.”
Bates also highlighted how Amelia Kerr, her New Zealand teammate, enjoys playing under Harmanpreet for Mumbai Indians in the WPL. She added, “Having the opportunity to lead in a home World Cup is a big moment, especially later in a career, and it will be exciting for her.”
Bates Eyes Major Milestone
The upcoming match carries personal significance for Bates too. She is only eight runs away from becoming the second player to cross 6,000 WODI runs. The veteran batter currently has 5,992 runs in 191 matches and 180 innings at an average of 38.16. Her record includes nine centuries, 16 half-centuries, and a top score of 173*.
However, Bates has struggled to find form in this tournament, managing only 29 runs in three innings with two ducks. A strong knock against India could not only help her reach a historic milestone but also keep New Zealand’s semifinal hopes alive.
