Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh credited Jasprit Bumrah for shaping his yorker mastery, admitting that much of his success stems from observing Bumrah’s technique. The left-arm seamer, who rose through the IPL during the Covid era, has grown into one of the sharpest yorker specialists in modern T20 cricket. His consistency earned him the ICC T20I Cricketer of the Year 2024 award, further cementing his place among the elite fast bowlers.
Speaking on the ‘Breakfast with Champions’ show, the Punjab pacer opened up about the craft behind his yorkers and the consistency that mirrors Bumrah’s. When asked about his near-machine precision, he said:
“So the vending machine or whatever the highest level is, it goes to Jassie (Jasprit Bumrah) Bhai. That goes to him. After that yes, if you press the yorker button in such a vending machine if the ball falls somewhere close, if the batter gets out or does that not go for a six, then yes, you can put me in that. So all the credit goes to Jassie bhai for the way I bowl.”
Rising from IPL to India’s T20 Backbone
Since making his entry into India’s white-ball setup, Arshdeep Singh has steadily become a vital figure in the T20I bowling unit. His growth and control at the death have made him Bumrah’s most trusted partner in recent years.
During the 2024 T20 World Cup, Arshdeep’s disciplined spell in the final proved crucial in India’s triumph. He bowled a brilliant 19th over, conceding just four runs after Bumrah’s tight two-run over. The left-armer also dismissed Aiden Markram and Quinton de Kock, delivering two deadly yorkers that left South Africa chasing 16 runs in the last over of the final at Barbados. His precision under pressure reflected how far he has evolved.
Learning from Legends: Akram, Zaheer, and Malinga
Arshdeep shared that he studies great left-arm pacers to refine his yorker skill. From Wasim Akram’s stumps-hitting precision to Zaheer Khan’s control and Lasith Malinga’s philosophy of practice, each has influenced his craft deeply.
“All left-arm pacers that are there on YouTube, I don’t think I’ve missed anyone’s video yet. If I used to watch Yorkers, I really liked Wasim Akram’s compilation video. In all the videos he was hitting only the stumps. A lefty throwing these in-swings in reverse swing to a righty, I used to enjoy it a lot. What a skill he had. If I’m watching reverse swing then I’m watching Zaheer (Khan) Bhai’s as well. This is a skill you have to put a lot of your effort into.
Even if you open (Lasith) Malinga’s interviews and watch them, he also says the same thing that this is not such a skill that if you learn it once, then you get it. My father or my coach told me that the more you practice it, the more you will achieve mastery in it. If you are bowling with 80% effort in practice, it becomes half of that in the match, 50%. The percentage reduces during the match.”
Continuous Practice Breeds Perfection
Arshdeep emphasized that perfecting yorkers is an ongoing journey requiring hours of consistent practice. His disciplined approach and humble acknowledgment of his mentors showcase his commitment to excellence.
With Bumrah as a mentor and inspiration, and with influences from Akram and Zaheer, Arshdeep represents India’s next generation of world-class pacers—combining skill, intelligence, and relentless discipline.
