The Million Dollar One Point Slam is back at the Australian Open 2025 with a bigger stage and prize. Amateur players will get a rare chance to face tennis icons, including world number one Carlos Alcaraz, for a massive A$1 million.

The unique contest will take place at Melbourne Park before the tournament begins. It will feature 10 amateur players competing against 22 professionals in a single-point knockout battle. Players will decide the server with a quick game of rock, paper, scissors. Whoever wins that one crucial point will move to the next round.

The champion will earn £490,000, almost equal to the A$1.1 million (£540,000) prize given to singles semi-finalists.

Bigger Stakes and Stronger Field in 2025

The event first appeared earlier this year but failed to grab attention. The prize money then was only A$60,000 (£29,400), and few top players joined. Andrey Rublev was the only top-10 star in the draw. He lost in the quarter-finals after missing his single serve.

Australian player Omar Jasika lifted the trophy by defeating a mixed field of 16 amateurs aged 15 to 72 and 16 professionals.

Tournament director Craig Tilley said, “Whether you’re an amateur or a pro, the ultimate winner will walk away with the prize. Entries will open soon at clubs across the country.” He also hinted at “more big names” and even “celebrities” joining this edition.

Format and Schedule for the 2025 Edition

Organisers have not revealed every detail yet, but the event will likely follow a similar format. Professionals will get one serve, while amateurs will have two — giving them a slight edge.

The tournament will include five knockout rounds and will now take place at the iconic Rod Laver Arena instead of the smaller Kia Arena. Final matches will happen in a night session, replacing the earlier afternoon schedule.

Eight amateurs will secure their spots by winning qualifying events across Australian states and territories. Organisers will fill the last two spots during the opening week, starting 12 January.

Tennis Experiments With New Fan-Focused Formats

The One Point Slam is part of tennis’ push to attract wider audiences with shorter, more exciting formats. A similar example was the US Open’s $1 million mixed doubles event, which drew major singles players into doubles competition.

With more prize money, bigger names, and a larger stage, the 2025 Million Dollar One Point Slam promises thrilling matchups. It will bring together passionate amateurs and the sport’s top stars for one unforgettable showdown.
