Hamilton Risks Grid Penalty for Red Flag Incident in SingaporeHamilton Risks Grid Penalty for Red Flag Incident in Singapore

Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton is under F1 investigation for allegedly speeding under a red flag during the third practice session of the Singapore Grand Prix 2025. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon at the Marina Bay Street Circuit after Liam Lawson crashed at Turn 7.

Lawson lost control of his Racing Bulls car when it bottomed out on the kerbs and slammed into the barriers at the exit of the corner. This was his second crash in back-to-back sessions, creating more pressure ahead of qualifying.

Onboard Footage Puts Hamilton Under Scrutiny

The focus quickly shifted from Lawson’s mistake to Hamilton’s driving. Onboard footage shows the Ferrari driver passing Lawson’s stationary car before Turn 8. He then accelerated on the second half of the lap as he returned to the pitlane. That decision might violate Article 37.6 of Formula 1’s sporting regulations.

According to the rulebook, “all cars must immediately reduce speed and proceed slowly back to the pitlane” during a red flag period. Drivers must also stay above the minimum time displayed on their dashboards at least once per marshalling sector to confirm they have slowed down properly.

The stewards summoned Hamilton and the Ferrari team for a hearing at 7 PM local time to explain his actions. The FIA takes safety-related offences seriously, and a confirmed breach could result in a grid penalty and penalty points on Hamilton’s Super Licence.

Ferrari Faces Multiple Issues in Singapore Weekend

This isn’t Ferrari’s first run-in with the stewards this weekend. Earlier, officials fined the team €10,000 for an unsafe pitlane release during FP2. Charles Leclerc exited directly in front of Lando Norris, which damaged the McLaren’s front wing.

The outcome of Hamilton’s case could shake up the starting grid and heavily influence the dynamics of Sunday’s race. With qualifying just hours away, fans and teams alike await the decision that could impact both Ferrari’s title hopes and Hamilton’s championship campaign.

At a street circuit as punishing as Marina Bay, every grid position matters — and a penalty now could be costly.
