Will Jonathan Kuminga Accept Warriors’ $7.9M Qualifying Offer? Will Jonathan Kuminga Accept Warriors’ $7.9M Qualifying Offer?

Jonathan Kuminga is reportedly considering accepting the Golden State Warriors’ qualifying offer of $7.9 million, according to his agent, Aaron Turner. This comes as a result of stalled contract negotiations, with Kuminga requesting better terms than the Warriors have currently provided.

“There’s a lot of upside,” Turner shared during his appearance on The Hoop Collective podcast. “He wants to pick where he wants to go. So the QO is real for sure.”

Warriors’ Contract Proposals and Kuminga’s Demands

The Warriors have presented Kuminga with three different contract options. The most lucrative is a three-year, $75.2 million deal, which includes a team option for the third year and guarantees Kuminga $48.3 million in the first two seasons. Additional offers include a two-year, $45 million deal with a team option and a three-year, $54 million deal without any options. However, Kuminga has rejected all these proposals, seeking a player option in any contract.

“If [the Warriors] want to win now, if you want a guy that’s happy and treated fairly who is a big part of this team, we believe, moving forward, you give him the player option,” Turner emphasized. “You do lose a little of that trade value [giving that up]. But if it’s about the here and now, you give him that.”

Kuminga’s Future: Will He Take the Qualifying Offer?

Despite his willingness to return to the Warriors, Jonathan Kuminga faces a major decision. If the Warriors do not meet his terms, he could opt to sign the qualifying offer, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next year. This would also protect him from being traded, as it would give him a built-in no-trade clause.

“If JK wants to take it, it does have upside, right?” Turner said. “You’re not getting traded. You’re going to have unrestricted free agency.”

Kuminga’s agent has indicated that while taking the qualifying offer would cost him significant guaranteed money, it would give him much-needed control over his future. As the season draws near, the pressure mounts on the Warriors to either improve their offer or risk losing a valuable player who could play a key role in their future.
