Toto Wolff Confirms George Russell’s 2026 Mercedes F1 FutureToto Wolff Confirms George Russell’s 2026 Mercedes F1 Future

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has explained the latest progress on George Russell’s 2026 Formula 1 contract, confirming that discussions are underway. Wolff emphasised Mercedes’ commitment to keeping Russell alongside rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli as the team finalises its line-up.

Wolff highlighted the key areas still under review. “With George, there’s a few things where we want to optimise, some of the travelling and the marketing days. He’s an experienced driver, and for us, it’s always important to talk about it.

“We want to have the best performance of the drivers, and I think we’ve given both of them quite a strain with marketing activities and media activities, and this is how we’re recalibrating.”

Russell’s Approach to Contract Talks

The 27-year-old had already stated that he would not commit during the summer break, explaining his focus was to “have a rest and recharge.” Despite this, Wolff reassured fans that Russell’s future with the team is secure.

“I always say there’s not going to be any big news, because we’re doing this. We’re continuing with both of them, of course,” Wolff said.

Mercedes Confident in Line-Up

While some expected a major reveal, Wolff downplayed the idea. “Is there going to be an announcement in Monza? No, but I don’t think it’s going to be even a big announcement, we’re just going to give you the heads-up and say we’ve put a signature onto the agreement.”

Mercedes currently sits third in the constructors’ standings, only 12 points behind Ferrari and 34 clear of Red Bull. Russell has scored 74% of the team’s points, proving his value.

Antonelli, meanwhile, has struggled recently with just one point in five rounds, but Wolff and Russell have defended the 19-year-old’s development.
