Liverpool have signed Sweden striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record fee of £125 million. The move ends the Alexander Isak transfer saga and brings the striker to Premier League champions Liverpool on a six-year deal.
Newcastle had earlier rejected a £110m bid from Liverpool. The two clubs finally reached agreement on deadline day. The deal makes Isak the most expensive signing in Premier League history, beating Moises Caicedo’s £115m move to Chelsea.
How the Isak Saga Ended
Isak was Newcastle’s top scorer last season with 27 goals in 42 matches. He also scored in the Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool, giving Newcastle their first domestic trophy in 70 years.
Talk of his exit started early in the summer when reports said he wanted to consider a move away from St James’ Park. He skipped Newcastle’s pre-season tour of Asia and trained alone at former club Real Sociedad.
Liverpool had already signed Hugo Ekitike. They then made a £110m offer in early August, which was rejected. Isak made his stance clear with a statement saying promises had been “broken” by the Newcastle hierarchy and that “change is in the best interests of everyone”.
Newcastle’s Replacement Opened the Door
Isak missed Newcastle’s first three league games, including a 3-2 loss to Liverpool. Eddie Howe still insisted he wanted Isak back, but fans showed their frustration.
Newcastle then signed striker Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart in a £64m deal. That move gave them the cover needed to approve Isak’s sale.
The transfer takes Liverpool’s summer spending above £400m. They already broke their club record by signing Florian Wirtz for £100m. They also added Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi and Giovanni Leoni.
Alexander Isak now joins Arne Slot’s Liverpool squad as the key signing of the summer. The record-breaking deal will go down as one of the biggest in football history.
